A long range refers to as high contrast, a medium range means moderate contrast, while a short range refers to low contrast, or flatness. The term tone refers to any area of uniform density on a print, negative, transparency or pixels on a screen. Tone is also used to refer to visual weight or perceived lightness or darkness of an image.

In simple terms tone is the strength of grays between white and black. It relates to brightness, lightness and darkness, and varies according to the direction and intensity of illumination.
Any picture consisting of mostly dark tones and black is known as “low-key”; while one that is made of predominantly light bright tones and white is referred to as “high-key”. A color photograph can also be described as high- or low-key.
Any picture, whether black and white or color involves a tonal range or tonality since the grays making tonal range may be mixed with color. Color photography extends the tonal range because variations of brightness can be produced by changes of hue as well as of light intensity. Inherently color has differing brightness values. Within each color are countless individual hues with subtly different intensities.
A range of hues can therefore itself provide some tonal variety in a picture in a strong but flat lighting.Light and the angle at which it strikes the subject are of primary importance to tone. It is important that tones in a picture relate to the subject, especially where the intension is to create a strong emotional response. In this way, tone can be related to mood: dark tones are often associated with mystery or menace, light tones with freedom, space and softness.
In using this relationship tone becomes a much more important compositional element than hue in monochromatic pictures and in dim light, which tends to blend colors and disguise their differences. But sensitivity to both tone and hue, and their interplay, is needed to produced and or retouch effective images.Best regards,Julio.
